A Little Chemistry
Copaiba's main component, beta-caryophyllene (BCP), a constituent with an almost endless spectrum of benefits. In fact, Copaiba is the essential oil with the highest known concentration of beta-caryophyllene. Beta-caryophyllene targets the CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system.
Did your ears perk up at the mention of the endocannabinoid system? It's a hot term in complementary and alternative medicine these days. That's because it plays a fundamental role in managing many concerns, including mood, inflammation, appetite, and relaxation. This biological system is found throughout the central and peripheral nervous system, and acts as a regulator for countless physiological processes.
The system is named after compounds in CBD oil: cannabinoids. Now, cannabinoid compounds in CBD do not actually bind directly to either type of receptor, so they affect the ECS only indirectly.
Beta-caryophillene, on the other hand, directly binds to CB2 receptors and so produces rapid and powerful changes within the body.
While beta-caryophyllene is an extraordinary compound, it makes up only about 50% of doTERRA's Copaiba oil. The other 50% is made of sesquiterpenes such as copaene, bergamotene, and humulene, which have also been shown to have a number of beneficial health properties -- from antioxidant activity to immune system activity and more. This is why Copaiba offers such a plethora of benefits to so many body systems.
