Essential oil diffusers are convenient, mess-free tools that let you take advantage of the aromatic benefits of essential oils. Use a diffuser to fill your home or workspace with uplifting, energizing scents or cultivate a calm space at bedtime. There are several types of diffusers to choose from. Which one is right for you?

Ultrasonic Diffusers

Ultrasonic diffusers use water and electronic frequencies to mix essential oil and water, and a fan to blow the resulting mist into the air. The ultrasonic vibrations are created by a small disk under the surface of the water, and cause the essential oil to break into tiny micro particles, which the body more readily absorbs. The vibration also causes the water to emit negative ions, which have particular health benefits as well.

Just think of how you feel when you breathe in after a good rain, or when you stand beside a waterfall: the movement of the water creates negative ions, which help us feel good.

Most diffusers sold by dōTERRA are ultrasonic diffusers.

Nebulizing

A nebulizing diffuser breaks down the essential oil into tiny particles through the use of a high velocity, pressurized air stream and jet nozzle and does not use water or heat. When the oil is released from the diffuser, it goes into the air in an ultra-fine mist. The fine mist created by a nebulizing diffuser does not alter the chemical composition or the scent of essential oils. It diffuses the entire oil at once instead of in stages (versus how some other diffuser types release the lighter chemical components of an essential oil first and the heavier components later). With a nebulizing essential oil diffuser, the particle size is also small enough to be easily inhaled and used for aromatherapy.

Evaporative Diffusers

Evaporative diffusers use airflow to spread the aroma of essential oils into an area. This type of diffuser can be as simple as a cloth pinned to a fan, or they can be a little or a lot fancier. The concept is that air blows past a tissue or pad that has been infused with essential oils. The movement of the air lifts the oil away from the surface and blows it around the room.

Passive Diffusers

As the name suggests, passive diffusers allow drops of essential oils to gradually evaporate into the air. No water is used in this form of diffusing. One way to diffuse essential oil passively is to drop it onto a porous surface such as a cotton ball, lava stone or a wooden object. Because essential oil molecules are very light, they will naturally rise into the air over time. Another way to do the same thing is via a wick of some kind; place essential oil into a jar and drop a cotton wick or a diffuser reed into it. The essential oil will travel up the wick and passively diffuse into the air.

Heat Diffusers

Heat diffusers use heat to help drops of essential oil evaporate into the air. Heat does tend to change the chemical composition of the oils, so this is not the preferred way to diffuse high quality essential oils. Nevertheless, there are several valuable ways to use heat with essential oils.

For example, essential oils can enhance the benefits of a sauna or steam room. Use only one or two drops at the source of heat or steam, allow the treatment area to heat up, and enjoy air that is completely infused with essential oil during your treatment.

You can also make a steam tent using a bowl, a towel, and a few drops of essential oil. This can be useful as a facial treatment, or as a way to open up sinuses for clearer breathing.
