Deep Dive

Hinoki

Imagine a tree so serene and majestic that its wood has been cherished for centuries! That’s the Japanese Hinoki tree. Hinoki wood is incredibly durable, which makes it highly valued for construction. Well-built hinoki structures can last a thousand years or more. One example is the pagoda at Horyuji Temple in Nara, Japan. It was built around 600 AD and is still intact today.

When turned into an essential oil, its fresh, woody, and slightly balsamic aroma feels like a gentle forest hug. Whether you're looking to soothe your skin or just take a moment to breathe amidst a hectic day, Hinoki's got your back.

I hope you love Hinoki as much as I do! Dive into this forest retreat and let its calming embrace wash over you.

Did You Know?

  • Hinoki has been the foundation for historic Japanese temples and palaces. Imagine the stories!
  • Just half a pound of this precious wood gives us a 5 mL bottle of the oil.
  • Those tiny, intricate bonsais? Some artists use dwarf hinoki trees to create them!
Giving Back With Every Drop
Hinoki is adored in Japan, so much so that essential oil is only allowed to be produced from trees that have already fallen, or from byproducts of the timber industry.  doTERRA, in partnership with forest groups, crafts this beautiful oil from timber by-products. The best part? It's a win-win! We're aiding forest management and bringing job opportunities to rural Japan.

Emotional Healing with Hinoki

Hinoki is known as the oil of natural harmony and is a relaxing and slightly sedative oil. If you feel hurried, constricted, tense, or rigid, open a bottle of Hinoki and allow it to do its work.

Hinoki soothes away feelings of disorder and disharmony, and brings back a sense of energetic flow that helps to release the root of the disharmony. It helps you feel harmonious, aligned, ordered, relaxed and honourable.

Inhale from the bottle, diffuse it, or place a drop in your hands and inhale deeply. To use Hinoki topically, dilute 1-2 drops with carrier oil and apply to the temples, back of neck and along the spine.
