Deep Dive

Lavender

Lavender is one of the most recognized essential oils in the world, with a very long history behind it. The aroma is beloved for its soft, clean scent that as far back as Roman times was associated with laundry and cleaning... hence the name, which is derived from the Latin verb "lavare," which means "to wash."

doTERRA sources Lavender from Bulgaria.

Why Lavender?

Lavender is one of the most remarkably versatile essential oils, and many people call it the "Swiss Army Knife" of essential oils. It is good for the young and the old, on its own or mixed with other oils. It has a sedative action and calms the nervous system, it even puts allergy symptoms to sleep (sneezing, itchy eyes etc). But, it's useful for all things to do with the skin as well... everything from zits to sunburn to insect bites. Plus it benefits the respiratory system and the digestive system. Best of all, there is actually a lot of research backing up the centuries of traditional uses.

A Little Chemistry

What makes Lavender essential oil so great? One answer could be linalool, a molecule that has been scientifically shown to be calming as well as cleansing. That means that not only does it help calm us down, but it also helps to clear away germs.

Linalool is what gives Lavender its floral aroma. While many essential oils contain linalool, Lavender is one of the oils with the highest concentrations of this compound. (You can also find significant amounts of linalool in Basil, Cilantro, Coriander and Petitgrain.)

Newer research even indicates that linalool-rich Lavender may be beneficial to the immune system when taken internally!

Safety First!

Not all lavender comes from a field: It’s highly likely that the cheapy-cheapy bottle of lavender oil at chain drugstores (or Amazon), the lavender scented hand sanitizer or laundry soap at the supermarket, gets its scent from synthetic perfume made in a laboratory. Unscrupulous companies use synthetic cheats that have no benefit to brain, skin, mood or anything... in fact, they can cause harm to unsuspecting consumers.

That's why we only ever want to use dōTERRA certified essential oils!
