I grew up as a horse-crazy girl. I rode horses, read books and magazines about horses, watched movies about horses, and dreamed of the day when I would have a horse of my very own. In 2004, that dream came true when I purchased a beautiful 6 year old mare. Charm was every childhood wish and dream come true for me. Over the next 20 years, I spent many happy hours at the barn and in the saddle, enjoying a very special relationship with a very special animal. A day at the barn was a little holiday.
On January 2 last week, I received an urgent call that my horse had suddenly fallen ill. She was experiencing excruciating abdominal pain, and not even strong pain medication was helping her very much. At 25 years old, she was old, and this sudden illness was too much for her to overcome. I made the dreadful decision to euthanize her, and all week I have been in shock, grief and emotional pain.
I know that I am not alone... to be human is to experience great joy, but also great grief and pain. Today, I want to share some recipes and tips with you that I have used to ease the pain of grief and loss -- this week as well as other times of loss in my life. If you need help today, as I do, I hope that you will find comfort. If not, save this information for the day when you will need it.
