Forest Bathing

During the warmer months, I love spending time in the woods near my home. I am so lucky to live in a community that has plenty of green space and natural woods! When I step off the concrete sidewalk and onto a forest path, I find myself taking a deep breath and just relaxing. This summer I have been walking 4-5 kilometers each day on the winding, shaded paths. The smell of the trees, the sound of the birds, and the joy of seeing all the flowers in bloom along the way... it is so therapeutic!

Did you know that walking in the forest is a form of forest bathing? I have seen this term a lot in recent years, and I absolutely love the history (and the science) of the term, so I thought I would share a bit about it with you.

The term forest bathing comes from Japan! After the Second World War, rapid urbanization and technological advancements in Japan brought increasing rates of anxiety and stress-related illnesses. By the 1980s, it was obvious that something needed to be done. In an effort to encourage people to reconnect with nature, the government introduced the practice of "forest bathing" -- known as shinrin-yoku in Japanese.

In step with their recommendation to get out into nature, the Japanese government funded research on the health benefits of spending time in forests. These studies led to the formal recognition of forest bathing as a therapeutic practice and form of preventative healthcare. Today, forest bathing has gained international recognition as a form of nature therapy, spreading to other countries as a way to counterbalance modern life stresses and promote mental and physical well-being.

Unlike hiking, forest bathing emphasizes slow, mindful exploration rather than reaching a destination. It focuses on disengaging from electronics and time pressures and instead, using all five senses to foster a deep connection with nature, promoting relaxation and mental clarity. Benefits include reduced stress, improved mood, and potential boosts to the immune system due to exposure to the natural compounds released by trees. How AMAZING is that?! I love it!

Did you know that dōTERRA has a Forest Bathing blend? It's called Shinrin-Yoku, and it was developed specifically to help us create that meditative walk in the woods atmosphere, right in our own homes. Check out my Deep Dive on this blend!
