Have you ever discovered at the last minute that you forgot to buy a gift, or that you don't have anything on hand to take as a gift when invited to a party? Many years ago it happened to me and I learned a very big lesson!
That year the children were not babies anymore, and since they were all boys, I asked my hubby to do the shopping for the "Santa gift" for them. Meanwhile, I was cooking, cleaning, wrapping and decorating like mad. And, did I mention it was Christmas Eve? Once we got the boys to bed, it was time to arrange the gifts under the tree. Here is the gift for Boy #1. Here is the gift for Boy #2. But where is the gift for Boy #3? The stores were closed, and hubby had FORGOTTEN to buy a gift for the youngest child. The sinking feeling we had as we both realized the mistake was just awful.
It would have been a very sad Christmas morning for our youngest, had I not suddenly remembered about a toy I had purchased in the summer and tucked away for a birthday or some other occasion. What sweet relief to realize that the day was saved!
Lesson learned... ALWAYS have a backup gift, possibly several, especially at Christmas.
Here are some simple and very quick giftable recipes for you. Make them in advance -- or not -- and be prepared for every possible gift situation this season.
Layered Mason Jar Cocoa
Making this recipe in advance is recommended so you are not rushed in making the mason jar look beautiful with ribbons and tags. To infuse the sugar with mint, simply put the sugar in a small bowl and drop in the Peppermint or Supermint. Stir to dissolve the essential oil completely in the sugar. You could also make a spicy cocoa by using Cinnamon essential oil instead of Peppermint.
Evergreen Hydrating Scrub
A super hydrating scrub is one of my all-time favourite DIY spa recipes. I use this in the shower all year long to keep my skin hydrated and protected. This version uses tree blends for a wintery pick-me-up, but you could use any essential oil or blend that you want.
Package in a pretty jar and decorate with ribbon and a twig of pine, with a tag to explain what it is and how to use it.
Festive Potpourri
I remember making clove-studded oranges at Christmas time as a child, so I have great nostalgia for this classic festive potpourri element. You can include decorated oranges in this recipe for potpourri if you want, depending on your inclination and the time you want to spend making it. Gift the potpourri in a mesh bag or a cellophane bag, or right in a pretty bowl wrapped in cellophane. Include a bottle of essential oil so your recipient can refresh the aroma whenever they need to.
Enjoy the making and the giving of these handmade gifts!
