More Pumpkin Spice, Please!

I am not the only one who starts craving spices as soon as the weather gets a little cool, I'm sure. I went to the local farmer's market yesterday and there were many spice-infused goodies to make me excited about fall! In my neighborhood there are even a few trees showing a hint of red, orange and yellow, so it is NOT too early to break out the warming spices!  Below are a few ideas to use as inspiration for your spice oils.

Wondering what special properties spice oils have? Why do we crave the comforts of spice when the weather turns chilly? Check out my Deep Dives on Cinnamon, Clove and Ginger. You will find loads of information, recipes, tips and more on those pages.

1. Diffuse, diffuse, diffuse. I have an ultrasonic diffuser in my entryway, and I love to diffuse On Guard at this time of year. Everyone who enters your home brings a lungful of air with them, so any germs they are carrying get breathed out as soon as they enter your home. Make sure you are diffusing On Guard in this part of your home to neutralize those threats before they set up camp in your house (the germs I mean, not the visitors!) Or, use one of the many fall-inspired blends that people have concocted. Here is one to try!

2. For goodness sake, cook with spices! There are SO many ways to amplify flavour with spice oils, and lots of reasons to do it!
  • Use Cinnamon or Cardamom in your coffee, tea, hot chocolate or hot apple cider. Drink up!
  • Add spice oils to granola, cookies, or (my favourite) apple crumble.
  • Flavour salad dressing with spice oils to give a delicious and unexpected boost to fall salads.
  • Brush squash with melted butter and a drop of Cinnamon, Ginger or even On Guard before roasting.
  • Add a few drops of spice oils to the glaze for baked ham.
Here is a yummy recipe to try!

3. Increase circulation with a spice-oil-infused scrub or body butter. Spice oils are very motivating to blood circulation. If you suffer from cold hands and feet, even adding a drop of a spicy blend like Passion to unscented lotion can really help warm fingers and toes. (I find the Passion blend to be the very best solution for arthritis pain in my hands, when I have a flare up.) Here is a DIY body butter recipe for you to try -- you're going to LOVE it!
